General Info on High School Diving

High School divers only compete on the 1M springboard.

Four basic parts to diving:

  1. Approach
  2. Take-off
  3. Dive
  4. Entry

 

Scoring:

Judges score in whole or half points along the following lines:

  • Completely failed — 0 points
  • Unsatisfactory — 0.5 to 2 points
  • Deficient — 2.5 to 4.5 points
  • Satisfactory — 5 to 6 points
  • Good — 6.5 to 8 points
  • Very good — 8.5 to 10 point

Dive Score = Sum of 3 judges scores X DD

Varsity requirements:

The varsity level you need at least six dives.

There are five diving categories – forward, back, reverse, and inward, and twisting.

There are four dive positions – tuck, pike, straight, and free (free is only used for twisting)

Within a six-dive list, at least one dive must come from each of the diving catergories.  The sixth dive may come from the category of the diver’s choice, but cannot be a previously used dive. Within the six-dive list, at least one dive must be from each of the four dive positions.

*To compete in a championship meet, such as a regional or state championship, a diver needs eleven dives; one voluntary dive from each of the five diving categories, one optional dive from each of the five categories, and a sixth optional dive that can come from any of the categories.
