Incoming 8th Graders

Welcome to the Park HS Band website! The purpose of this page is to introduce you to the band at Park HS and answer questions that incoming 8th graders typically ask. We even made this snazzy video to show you what we do... or even a slideshow....

Having band as a part of your daily class schedule is a fantastic break from typical academics of the day. Don't misunderstand me - we work hard to develop skills and prepare pristine performance - but as the German Author Berthold Auerbach said, "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."

Check out these Top 10 Most Often Asked Questions:

1. How do I register for band?

  • By using the registration codes MU0018, MU0019, MU0020

2. How do I make room for band in my schedule?

You can do one of two things:

  • Delay Phy Ed and Health until sophomore year. Many band kids do this, so they end up in a Phy Ed class with friends anyway.

  • OR, delay taking a foreign language until a sophomore year. Several band kids choose this option as well and it works out fine

3. Can I take band and AVID?

  • Yes if you do BOTH of the options in the answer to Questions #1

4. Can I take IB and band?

  • Yes, although it is possible that you may miss a semester of band to take Theory of Knowledge in a later year. We work with you on this.

5. What do you do in band?

  • Have a great time, prepare music for concerts, develop music skills, make friends, take a break from the rigors of the day - similar to your middle school band experience, just a bit more advanced.

6. Do I have to join the Marching Band?

  • Nope, although we highly encourage it! Many kids don't join at the start of their freshman year and realize they missed out on a good time and end up joining as a sophomore. Don't miss out on a year! More info comes out about late March.

7. Do I have to be in the Pep Band?

  • Yes. All 3 high schools in the district are structured this way. Pep Band music is a style of music we study and athletic events are the performance venue. HOWEVER - we work hard to resolve scheduling conflicts, including requiring only 8 of the 10 performances and excusing athletes that are on the court at the same time. It really is a fun time!

8. What does it cost?

  • Other than your reeds or possible instrument rental fee from the school? Nothing. We sell optional Band Apparel like T-Shirts and Sweatshirts, but no more cost than Middle School.

9. How is band graded?

  • We do our best to assess your growth and grade your progress. You are required to be prepared for and participate in daily rehearsals, concerts and lessons. We want you to succeed!

10. Actually, there never really is a 10th question. People usually join band by now...
